Guidelines for Working with Elected Officials

• We encourage you to contact and meet with Senators, Representatives, and Congressional staff.
  • Tell Government Affairs what you are doing and if you want/need assistance.  We want to help.
  • Advocate for AUSA Focus Areas.
  • Meet on Capitol Hill or where you are.  “All politics is local.”
  • Meet as a constituent, veteran, and AUSA member – Region/Chapter Leader. 
  • Keep in touch with the contact you made and tell Government Affairs about it.
  • Coordinate within the Region/Chapter.  Numbers help.  
• IRS 501(c)(3) tax exemption status requires no influence of elections.  We are nonpartisan. 
  • We are prohibited from supporting or participating in any political campaign for or against a candidate for local, state, or federal office.  
• Be careful about inviting elected officials to an AUSA event. 
  • No campaign speeches or campaigning.
  • Consult with VP for Membership & Meetings, and Government Affairs.
• AUSA does not lobby or advocate for state or local legislation.
