National University: Military-Friendly & Veteran-Centric since 1971
National University has been breaking barriers in education since it was founded in 1971 by retired U.S. Navy Captain David Chigos. Today, we’re a network of educational institutions united in our mission to build a better future for our 40,000+ students and more than 3,300 employees nationwide.
Through our whole-human approach to education that includes 4-week courses backed by academic, emotional, career and financial support—NU offers 75+ career-relevant programs to enable students with the skills to thrive in today's knowledge economy.

Additionally, NU received several awards for its military-friendly programs. It was named one of America's Top Military-Friendly Colleges and Universities in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 by Military Advanced Education magazine. It was also the recipient of the 2003 Ray Ehrensberger Award for excellence in military education. NU is approved according to the Department of Defense MOU for the training of active-duty service members, veterans, and reservists. The institution is authorized to process active-duty tuition assistance (TA).
Yellow Ribbon University
As a veteran-founded, military-friendly school—we are committed to supporting our service members, military veterans, and their families. We honor that commitment by offering tuition discounts and scholarships for veterans and their families, in addition to facilitating Post 9/11 GI Bill® benefits. The NU Veteran Center in San Diego offers additional services and resources. Military students can also access our Virtual Veteran Center online, 24/7.
National University offers transfer-friendly degree programs to help maximize the credits you've earned in previous college courses—including college credits from other accredited institutions, professional or technical certifications, and military training and experience. This enables learners to streamline their speed to degree completion and make the most of their previous learning or experience.
Educational Partnerships
We also help businesses and organizations attract and retain employees through customized education and training programs. Through its Workforce Education Solutions (WES), NU partners with leading Fortune 500 companies and government organizations nationwide, in addition to providing training and development programs. NU affiliate institutions include the City University of Seattle and Sanford College of Education.
